On the Road to Social Transformation: Utilizing Cultural and Community Strengths to End Domestic Violence - Illinois

A free Train-the-Trainer 2-Day workshop for OVW grantees and other providers of Domestic Violence Services for Latina Survivors of Domestic Violence, including Immigrant Women. The training is sponsored by Alianza—the National Latino Alliance for the Elimination of Domestic Violence, the U.S. Department of Justice/Office of Violence Against Women. It is being co-hosted by Heartland Alliance Human Care a Project of Heartland Alliance Ending Poverty.

Through this training, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Understand the importance of making their programs & services more accessible and responsive to the particular needs of underserved populations, specifically Latinas/os
  • Learn how to conduct a cultural competency organizational self-assessment to help determine what changes need to be made, within their organizations, to create organizational diversity, eliminate disparities, and develop culturally competent programs and services.
  • Learn about various culturally and linguistically responsive approaches, strategies and programs created to address the specific needs of Latina survivors, families and communities and explore examples of what culturally responsive services look like in terms of policies, staffing, outreach, accessibility, practices and other key elements.

WHO MAY ATTEND?

OVW grantees and other DV service providers. Attendance is limited to the first 40 participants who register.

COST:

The workshop is provided free of charge. Scholarships of up to $750 will be provided to offset airfare, lodging, ground travel and M&IE expenses, based on applicant needs. No more than 2 scholarships will be provided per agency.

TRAINERS:

Mily Treviño Saucedo is the co-founder and the former Executive Director of Organización en California de Líderes Campesinas, Inc.( Líderes Campesinas). She has received numerous community and educational awards throughout her career. She was recognized as one of the 100 Heroines of the World in New York in 1998. In 2004, the Ford Foundation & New York University selected her for the Leadership for a Changing World award and People Magazine recognized Mily in January & April 2006. In 2009, she was honored in 4 regional rural areas in California for her 30+ years of distinguished leadership. She sits on numerous councils as well as regional and national boards and task forces. While Executive Director at Lideres Campesinas, Ms. Treviño-Sauceda partnered with Alianza on several training and technical assistance projects.

Patricia S. Castillo has worked more than 25 years to end violence against women and children. She is the Executive Director of the San Antonio based P.E.A.C.E. Initiative (Putting an End to Abuse through Community Efforts), a coalition of 50 agencies, organizations and individuals. From 1990 to 2002, as Projects Coordinator for the P.E.A.C.E. Initiative, she developed domestic violence community projects and public policy through collaboration and community organization. As the Executive Director of the P.E.A.C.E. Initiative, she continues to do this work as well as serve as an advocate, educator and technical assistance resource to many sectors of the community, including civic, legal, medical, religious, educational, human resource and media groups; and directs citizen coalitions and networks. She has done numerous trainings at the local, regional, and national levels for the past 15 years. Internationally, she has trained in Honduras, Brazil, China, Russia, Guatemala, Mexico, and Nicaragua. The P.E.A.C.E. Initiative has partnered with Alianza on several OVW/DOJ funded projects.
