A 2-Day Train-the-Trainer Workshop for OVW Grantees & other DV Providers that Serve Latina Survivors (including Immigrants)
Please Note new training and reception location below. Activities are no longer in Washington Heights; they are in mid-town Manhattan.
(Sponsored by Alianza and the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women)
There is broad recognition within the domestic violence movement that the lack of financial independence is a major barrier that contributes to keeping many victims/survivors in violent and abusive relationships. Acquiring financial knowledge can be a key step for the survival of many victims and their children.
Through this training, participants will have the opportunity to:
- Learn about the specific needs and circumstances of Latina victims as concerns financial education and cultural considerations
- Be trained in the basics of financial literacy and the development of small businesses
- Receive copies of our training curriculum and training video: ¡SiPodemos/Yes We Can! - Beyond Domestic Violence: Achieving Financial Independence. The curriculum was developed in collaboration with WESST, a nonprofit agency dedicated to small business development and financial training, based in New Mexico.
- Learn effective methods for facilitating workshops using our training curriculum (¡Si Podemos/Yes We Can)
The training is based on a bi-lingual curriculum specifically designed for this OVW Project. Components of the training include: 1) Money Management: Household Budgeting, How Banks and Financial Institutions work, Opening and Balancing a Checkbook, Credit Basics, Personal and Business Loans; 2) Small Businesses: Life as a Business Owner, Creating a Business Plan, New Business and Marketing/Promotion Worksheets, and Instructional Case Studies. The curriculum was developed in collaboration with WESST, a small business development and training nonprofit organization based in New Mexico.
The training video features interviews with several DV survivors who are now successful business owners and living lives free of violence.
